Meet Ronnie

Author, Minister, Missionary, and Stroke Survivor

The furniture in his bedroom seems to bounce up and down, but even after 10 years, it is only slightly better. A clumsy right hand reaches for support as a numb right foot drops to the carpet ...

The sun is rising on Cumming, Georgia, and it is time to face another day as a stroke survivor.

The familiar work routines are gone. No one wants a consultant whose speech is hard to understand. It’s been years since he flew to an urban center in the U.S. or Canada to help teams start new churches.

Eighteen years of their more than four decades of marriage were invested as missionaries. Ronnie and Gwenn lived and worked along side Spanish speaking and Quechua speaking Peruvians, but that was another life.

Today, the pull of the Keurig is relentless. Soon it will fill the kitchen with the aroma of dark roast coffee.

A partially paralyzed right hand made him a lefty. But unwilling to let impaired vision and other physical problems stand in the way, he grabs his iPad and pecks away with one finger on his left hand.

Impossible to Paint with Only One Brush

Ronnie is a minister and missionary who has owned multiple motorcycles and has ridden them on two continents. He lived outside the United States for more than a decade. He is fluent in English and Spanish; plus he has a limited knowledge of the Quechua language. He and Gwenn have lived in ten different cities over 43 years, but they have owned only two homes for less than a total of 20 of those years. Ronnie ranks World Cup Soccer above all other sport championships. He has served as a police chaplain. Ronnie and Gwenn once counted a dozen car or truck bombs they had personally felt in the previous twelve months, and counted more than twenty others they had heard (but not actually felt) during the same timeframe. Ronnie was present when a friend (a missionary colleague) was shot (two gunshot wounds) in a robbery. Ronnie was less than ten yards away when a friend (a missionary colleague) collapsed from a heart attack. Ronnie and two others were held at gun point in the dark while riding motorcycles in Peru. He knows what having hard conversations with his daughters is about because their fair complexion and blonde hair made them kidnapping targets. They have experienced multiple home invasions. They have faced the news, “Your six week old baby needs emergency surgery to survive.” Learn more about him in his book “Beyond My Strength.”

What people are saying about the book …

When you know that this book ends with Ronnie having a serious stroke, it’s like watching a movie about a disaster, like the Titanic. You know how it ends, but the story leading up to it both magnifies the tragedy and personalizes it. Ronnie has been very transparent in his recollections of his early life, family, engagement to Gwen, work overseas, and coping with a debilitating stroke. I wanted this book so badly to be a feel-good book. I wanted a happy ending. You love Ronnie and want the best for him! But that is the point of the book. It deals in reality. It is far from narcissistic blather. Yet, there is calculated adjustment and godly perseverance through every crisis in the book; long before the stroke. Ronnie has spent many years probing the depths of his soul. His actions, his faith, and his deep appreciation for life all tie together that has taken him beyond his strength.

This was such an amazing book for me to read. We all go through hard times during our lives. Some are worse than others; however, when you are going through something physical, emotional or spiritual, it’s not always easy to remember that. I have had to go on disability because of back & leg issues that worsen everyday so reading this book has given me so much hope and peace. I had to be reminded that God is in control and always will be. Thank you Ronnie for sharing your story and being such an encouragement to me.

Great inspirational book. Well written from a person that has lived this story. He proves God is faithful if we just trust him. This book will be good for anyone going through personal challenges. God is enough if we just trust and believe.

Beyond My Strength has made a huge impact on my life. I’m fortunate to know the author and I can say that the reader will not be disappointed with this true story. Ronnie has experienced life-changing events that could have destroyed his future, yet he prevailed with an immense trust in God. After I read the e-book, I’m willing to accept God’s will for my life no matter how severe. This isn’t an easy task. Thank you, Ronnie for showing us your courage and endurance. All My Best,

Beyond My Strength is truly a good read, especially for someone who has to overcome difficulties in life. Ronnie has experienced more than his share. He has maintained a positive attitude and relied on God for strength.

Doesn’t pretend to like hard times, but keeps God’s promises before him.

Ronnie does a great job taking the reader through the challenges of his life. I don’t want to create a spoiler alert. But, this is an amazing book, because of the way it was written. Many would never write a book like this if we faced similar setbacks that Ronnie has faced and continues to face. He is to be commended for having the perseverance to complete the writing of this book. I was inspired by his determination in dealing with the challenges that he has faced. You will be encouraged and challenged by this work. Well worth your time.

Ronnie’s story is one that begs to be told today and is needed desperately in these difficult days. It is a real story about real events in a man’s life. Any single event of this magnitude would spell defeat for most people. However, for Ronnie each event was simply a bump in the road that with God’s help and leaning on others, he has been able to intentionally move forward. Great book for one to recommend to someone who is facing steep climbs following difficult events.
